How to Extend Battery Life?
A cell phone without electricity is not worth anything so it is important to make sure that the battery life extends as long as the mobile phone is connected to the service. Of course, there are android cell phone batteries for almost every model however I’m sure someone out there would rather choose their original battery to increase its life or health and last longer rather than having to look for a replacement battery.
So let’s discuss today what steps need to be taken to improve and extend the battery life of an android and get the most out of your original battery and make it last as long as your cell phone is in use.
Let the Battery Fully Charge before First Use
This step is probably the best known however because it is very important we put it in the first place. Completely new batteries need to be charged before their first use to get maximum capacity.
If your cell phone has a nickel-based battery you must first charge them for 16 hours and then go through 2 to 4 full discharge cycles to improve its life. With lithium batteries, we charged them for about 5-6 hours.
To increase battery performance or extend the battery life of an android make sure it ignores the phone and tells you that the battery is full as this is inaccurate before the battery health has undergone initial charging.
Always Charge Your Phone Properly
Most new cell phones have lithium-ion batteries while older ones usually have nickel-based batteries. (Read the label on the back of the battery or in the technical specifications of your owner’s manual to determine your battery type)
Nickel-based batteries (NiCd and NiMH) have a phenomenon known as the “memory effect”. This means that if you charge the battery only partially eventually the battery forgets that it can be fully charged.
For cell phones with nickel batteries be sure to discharge them once every two to three weeks completely this will extend the battery life and will increase battery performance. (If you feel that your nickel-based battery is “suffering” from the “memory effect”, you can refurbish it. To rehabilitate the battery completely discharge it and then fully charge it (several times).
Lithium-ion batteries are completely different when it comes to charging. Lithium-ion batteries do not have the same memory effect. However many devices that use lithium batteries have a gauge that shows the user how much power is left. Lithium ions are oxidized in the battery and thus shorten its life.
After a certain period of time, the battery displays slightly different electronic characteristics which the device can only detect when the battery is completely discharged.
This type of problem is known as a virtual memory effect and “symptoms” are when you notice that your battery meter shows a high charge and then suddenly drops to a low charge when the battery is almost dead.
To extend the mobile battery life of an android or to prevent this from happening every thirty charge cycles you must discharge lithium-ion batteries until the phone gives a weak battery warning then fully charges them. (Do not fully discharge a lithium-ion battery! The life of a lithium-ion battery is shortened each time you fully discharge it.
Instead, charge it with the battery gauge showing one strip to the left.) This battery repair ensures that your lithium-ion battery gauge remains accurate. The virtual memory effect however does not affect the battery capacity as in nickel-based batteries.
Batteries Should Be Kept Cool at All Times
The batteries last the longest if used at room temperature. Avoid leaving your phone in a hot car or in direct sunlight and do not carry the phone in your pocket as your body temperature will raise its temperature instead bring yourself a cell phone case.
Also, make sure to check the battery while charging to see if it feels hot. If it appears to be too hot your charger may malfunction. Remember nothing wears out on a battery like prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
Keep the Battery Clean
Be sure to clean the metal contacts on the battery health and mobile phone to increase battery performance and extend battery life.
Over time contacts accumulate dirt. The best way to clean them is by using a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. This will maximize the efficiency of energy transfer.
